Pros: The Old Town Kayak is excellent for stability and durability. We tried this kayak on rough waters and it stood the waves very well, it took a good bashing and came out in one piece. This has to be one of the best SIT kayaks available in the market at a good price.
Cons: The only negative point we can say is that this kayak is a little heavy but if you have a good kayak cart this will not be an issue.
Old Town Predator Kayak Review in Details
The Old Town Predator 13 Kayak is a well-designed 13 foot kayak that can handle all the fishing and camping needs you could ever come up with. Adding accessories to this kayak is so easy that you may need to get creative to come up with what else you can add. While it is a sit in kayak, you can stand up and look around without taking a bath. Like to switch your rods a lot while fishing? No problem there either. In a few words, this kayak is an angler’s dream come true.
Let me start with the seating. The Old Town Predator 13 Kayak has a seating system that will let you forget about all the back pains you have experienced in the past when kayaking for hours. The seat has both a high and low position. With the seat in the high position you have more storage under the seat. I would be surprised if you need more space, but you can still have it. The seat is easy to fold down with one hand. This allows you to stand where the seat is when it is down. Why is this a good thing? Because a kayak’s seat is the balancing point in a kayak. By allowing you to stand at the balancing point, you will not be able to tip the kayak, even if you try. There is a useful assist strap helps you get upright.
Do you have a compass, GPS, or a bunch of other accessories that you like to take with you on those long fishing trips? Have you been drilling holes in your kayak to mount them? The Old Town Predator 13 Kayak has 6 removable mounting plates just like the Sun Dolphin Excursion. You only have to attach your accessories to one of the mounting positions. You no longer have to live with a dismounted accessory. Don’t like where or how you mounted something? Just remount it. Need a new mounting plate? Just order a replacement. They are moderately priced, so you don’t risk losing money over a poor mounting decision.
Do you carry a wide variety of rods when you go fishing? Again, the Old Town Predator 13 Kayak is a great choice for you. The rod pod allows you to store your rods beneath your seat and out of your way. They make sure you don’t catch the stored rods when you cast and the rod tips will not snag on branches as you paddle. Want to swap out rods? They are easy to switch and quick to deploy. You may just want to switch rods just because you can. It also comes in Green and Yellow. It’s a great kayak for short/medium trips but for long trips why not read our review on the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 Kayak.
Deck space was also well thought out as you have plenty of foot space. While the Old Town Predator 13 Kayak is relatively heavy, it is very wide and stable on the water. You can carry 425 pounds with you. This means you have enough carrying capacity to go out on those long, multi-day fishing trips. You will be able to bring all your tackle but plenty of camping gear also. You will want to consider a longer paddle with the Old Town Predator 13 Kayak. The extra width combined with the high seat position means you won’t be able to use shorter paddles and still dig deep enough into the water to propel yourself forward. This is not a real negative, it is simply an observation. The extra width is such a benefit that a longer paddle should not deter you from purchasing this fine kayak.
The width and weight makes this kayak feel like it rides on the water and not in the water. You will notice that this kayak tracks in a straight line long after you stop paddling. You can turn it easily. This combination of stability and manoeuvrability makes paddling this kayak a joy to experience. The ribbing and non-slip surface makes it not only easy to stand up, as mentioned above, but you can walk around this kayak without slipping, or worse, getting wet. The water just rolls off the deck, you can go barefoot if you wish without slipping around.
